ENGARDE co-organize international seminar for Ukrainian judges

The High Specialized Court of Ukraine for Civil and Criminal Cases, the Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution of the Ukrainian Bar Association, ENGARDE Attorneys at Law, BAIER Attorneys at Law, and the law firm EPAP Ukraine acted as co-organizers of the seminar for Ukrainian judges on the topic of “Recognition and Enforcement of International Arbitral Awards and Decisions of Foreign Courts in Ukraine – Outside Perspectives.”

The seminar was held on Friday, 27 May 2016, at the premises of the High Specialized Court of Ukraine for Civil and Criminal Cases on Povitroflotskyi Avenue. Ukrainian judges of courts of different instances, judges of international arbitration courts, Ukrainian and foreign lawyers and academics were among the participants.

The purpose of the event was to foster professional discussion of the current internationally established concepts of applying the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards. The issues concerning the interpretation of the New York Convention and the principle of reciprocity were also highlighted and debated at the event.

Ukrainian judges were provided with translated and available scientific literature for use in their practical work when considering issues related to the implementation of decisions rendered by international commercial arbitration tribunals and foreign courts.

Irina Nazarova, ENGARDE’s Managing Partner, spoke at the seminar with a welcoming speech. She also moderated Session I on “Validity of arbitration agreements – when it should bother the judge” and Session II “Grounds for refusal in enforcement of foreign judgments – practical aspects.”
